Cozy games for when you just want to unwind
Not every session needs a challenge. Some nights I just want something quiet to hold my attention while my brain slows down, and cozy games are built exactly for that.
Lantern Hollow is my current favorite for this. Wandering a hand-drawn village at night, lighting lanterns, poking at gentle puzzles, it never once nags or pressures. The sound design does a lot of the calming work.
The trick with cozy games is to lower your own expectations of 'progress.' You're not there to win, you're there to be somewhere pleasant for a bit. Games without a fail state suit that mood perfectly.
Simulation games can scratch a similar itch if they're low-stakes. Building something and watching it hum along, like a small airport in Skyport Tycoon, has its own soothing rhythm.
